On October 1, the Longyan City People’s Government Square in Liancheng, Fujian Province buzzed with excitement as the “Zhao Family Lion” South China Lion Dance Troupe from Guangzhou captivated the audience with a performance that highlighted a revered national-level intangible cultural heritage project. This thrilling showcase was part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, designed to enhance the cultural experience for both local residents and visitors.

As the drums echoed, eight vibrant lions leaped into action, dazzling the crowd with their agility and dynamic movements. Performers executed stunning techniques, including the traditional “Pulling the Lid,” high-pole stunts, and the intricate “Snake Dance.” The crowd’s enthusiasm surged with each act, as cheers and applause erupted, with many eager spectators capturing the electrifying moments on their phones.

Following the performance, the lively lions mingled with the audience, inviting people to reach out and touch their heads, tails, and bodies—an expression of shared joy and appreciation for this cherished art form.

“We’re thrilled to be in Liancheng today,” shared Zhao Weibin, the head of the Zhao Family Lion Troupe and a provincial representative inheritor of the Guangdong Lion Dance. “The local community has shown such enthusiasm, and we’re excited to share this thousand-year-old cultural tradition with everyone here, spreading the joy that intangible heritage can bring.”

Liancheng resident Lin Zhaoyang reflected on the occasion, stating, “Guangdong Lion Dance is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. We have many heritage projects right here in Liancheng too. Events like this are fantastic for showcasing our heritage and allowing it to shine even brighter.”
