During President Biden’s visit to Europe, he met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Berlin. At a joint press conference, Biden and Scholz issued a statement highlighting Germany’s decisive response to the outbreak of the Ukraine-Russia war. Scholz emphasized the importance of addressing the moment head-on, demonstrating determination, and aligning German foreign policy with current realities in steadfast support of Ukraine.
Prior to Biden’s meeting with Scholz, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed him with military honors and personally presented him with the Federal Republic of Germany’s Medal of Merit. This prestigious award represents the highest recognition from the German government for contributions in political, economic, and social achievements.
As of now, only former President George H.W. Bush has received this honor among Biden’s predecessors. During the ceremony, Steinmeier remarked, “When you were elected President, you rekindled hope for Europe within the Atlantic alliance overnight.”
Following this, Biden proceeded to the Chancellery for discussions with Scholz. During the joint statement, Biden pointed out that when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his brutal invasion of Ukraine, Germany reminded the world of the significance of alliances.
Biden underscored the fundamental partnership between Germany and the United States, calling Germany America’s closest and most important ally. He also expressed gratitude to the German government for its clear stance against anti-Semitism and its efforts to resist Iran. He thanked Scholz for his friendship.
Scholz emphasized that Biden’s visit to Berlin signifies a shared responsibility for peace, particularly in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Our actions are clear; we do everything possible to support Ukraine,” he said, while also ensuring that NATO will not become a target, preventing the conflict from escalating into a larger disaster.
Scholz reiterated that both the United States and Germany recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating, “Russia cannot carry out violent conquest of this land. As long as necessary, we stand by Ukraine.”
Both leaders also touched upon the conflict in the Middle East during the press conference. Biden remarked that the death of Hamas leader Yahia Sinwar represents a form of justice, highlighting the bloodshed involving Americans, Israelis, Palestinians, Germans, and many others. Scholz expressed hope that Sinwar’s death might lead to a cessation of hostilities in the conflict zone.
