On October 16, during an interactive dialogue at the 79th United Nations General Assembly’s Third Committee regarding human rights, Dai Bing, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, took a stand against the allegations presented by representatives from the U.S. and the U.K.
Dai emphasized that the international community should focus on the human rights situations in the U.S. and other Western nations. He pointed out that the U.S. has remained indifferent while over 40,000 civilians have lost their lives in Gaza. He criticized the domestic violence against students peacefully protesting and the U.S.’s role in escalating conflicts abroad by supplying weapons. Dai asserted that the U.S. bears significant responsibility for the humanitarian disasters in the Middle East.
He also addressed the historical context of the U.K., recalling hundreds of years of colonial rule that have contributed to conflicts in places like Palestine, Sudan, and Myanmar. He accused the U.K. of continuing to fan the flames of discord, thus carrying heavy moral culpability. Furthermore, Dai highlighted that a few Western nations, including the U.S. and U.K., have allowed the spread of Islamophobia and anti-Asian sentiments, perpetuating discrimination against minority groups. He described their claims of being champions of human rights as hypocritical.
Dai urged the High Commissioner’s office to seriously listen to the calls for justice from the international community and to hold accountable the U.S., U.K., and other Western nations for their human rights violations.
