On October 15, a significant event took place as the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China and the People’s Committee of Cao Bang Province in Vietnam officially launched the cross-border tourism cooperation zone at the Detian (Ban Gioc) Waterfall.
The Detian (Ban Gioc) Waterfall cross-border tourism cooperation zone, referred to as the “Zone,” marks China’s first cross-border tourism initiative. It is a collaborative effort between Guangxi Province and Cao Bang Province, situated along the Guichun River. One side features the stunning Detian Waterfall in Daxin County, Guangxi, while the other showcases the Ban Gioc Waterfall in Vietnam. Nestled in the picturesque “mountain and water gallery” along the China-Vietnam border, the area is renowned for its unique karst landscape and breathtaking natural scenery.
Thanks to the joint efforts of both nations, the Zone began trial operations on September 15, 2023. Tourists from both countries can now experience cross-border travel through a reservation-based group system, featuring fixed routes and limited daily crossings. As of October 10, 2023, the Zone welcomed 1,232 cross-border tour groups, totaling 17,991 visitors.
With the formal operation of the Zone, authorities plan to further optimize the cross-border travel experience. The daily limit on cross-border visitors will be increased from 500 to 1,000 per side, with adjustments made based on actual visitor numbers. Additionally, the duration for cross-border visits has been extended from five to six hours, and procedures will be streamlined for on-the-spot processing of travel documents. These changes also include simplifying the declaration process for common belongings such as cameras, enhancing convenience for travelers, and improving their overall experience.
Hu Fan, Vice Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, stated that the launch of the Zone represents a positive exploration into high-level collaborative efforts between China and Vietnam, providing valuable experience and setting an example for deeper cooperation and mutual benefits in border regions.
Zheng Changhui, Vice Chairman of the Cao Bang Province People’s Committee, expressed that the operation of the Zone will foster tourism cooperation between the two countries, strengthen friendly exchanges among their citizens, and significantly contribute to the ongoing development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and China.
On the same day, tourists from both countries enjoyed a seamless “cross-country” experience, taking in the beautiful sights and rich cultural offerings. “I brought 20 Vietnamese tourists for a ‘one-day tour of two countries’ today, and everyone had a fantastic time,” said Vietnamese tour guide Mo De Ren in an interview.
