On the evening of October 8th, the large-scale acrobatic show “Wuyang,” created by the Zhejiang Performing Arts Group’s Zhejiang Quyi Acrobatics Troupe, premiered at the Erqi Theater in Beijing. This production is one of the highlights of Zhejiang Performing Arts Group’s five-year anniversary showcase in the capital.

“Wuyang” tells the enduring story of civilization in Zhejiang and reflects the essence of the “Zhejiang spirit.” The performance is divided into three chapters: “Heaven,” “Earth,” and “Human.” It traces the evolution of civilization from Liangzhu to the Wu-Yue period and onto the Song Dynasty. Through high-difficulty acrobatic acts, the show narrates a “history of transformation,” emphasizing the “roots” and “soul” of the Zhejiang spirit. The “Heaven” chapter depicts the early stages of civilization, where the ancestors of Liangzhu struggled to survive in harsh environments while keeping their eyes on the stars, exploring the possibilities of sustaining civilization. The “Earth” chapter showcases the people’s love for their land, richening civilization through hard work. Finally, the “Human” chapter illustrates historical transformations, portraying people as both innocent, hardworking individuals and fearless heroes in the face of adversity.

On stage, “Wuyang” combines intricate acrobatic techniques with modern dance, classical dance, street dance, and magic, creating various narrative scenes, from ancient rituals and Liangzhu hunting excursions to conversations under the stars, pastoral idylls, labor scenes, youthful aspirations, and war calls. The atmosphere fluctuates between tension and excitement, lightheartedness, and solemnity. Director Guo Hongbo noted that beyond the physical skills, the performance employs extensive multimedia technology to enhance the ambiance, provide diverse environments, and create grand visuals that tell a profound story.

This show received accolades, including the Outstanding Program award at the 12th National Acrobatics Exhibition in August. It features several award-winning acrobatic techniques, such as “Dreaming of West Lake: Umbrella Skills,” which earned gold at the 13th Russian Nikulin Circus Festival, the 10th Wuhan International Acrobatics Art Festival, and the 8th National Acrobatic Golden Chrysanthemum Awards. Other notable performances include “Zen Martial Arts: Head Balancing Skills,” which won gold at the 4th Russian World Circus Arts Festival and the 17th France Mars International Circus Festival, as well as the magic act “Card Shadows,” which received the National Acrobatic Magic Competition’s Wenhua Award.
