The wealthiest ZIP code in the United States, 94027, is located on the San Francisco Peninsula. Recently, the local school district has become the center of attention as educators began a strike on October 23rd, advocating for higher salaries as well as improved healthcare and retirement benefits.
According to a report by NBC Bay Area, the 94027 ZIP code is home to the Las Lomitas Elementary School District, which encompasses two schools situated in Atherton and Menlo Park. The teachers are represented by the Las Lomitas Education Association. Both parties confirmed to the media on the evening of October 22nd that the strike would commence the following day.
Educators have expressed their frustration about working without a contract since July 2023. They believe the district has the resources necessary to provide competitive salaries and reliable healthcare. Without these essential benefits, many are facing the tough decision of leaving the district entirely or exiting the education profession.
Jennifer Montalvo, a union leader, emphasized the negative impact of high turnover on students. Despite being part of the wealthiest ZIP code in the nation, local educators are unable to earn enough to afford basic living expenses.
Both Atherton and Menlo Park are located in San Mateo County, south of San Francisco.
In a recent offer made by the school district on Tuesday evening, they proposed a 7% salary increase retroactive to the 2023-24 school year, followed by a 3% increase from the 2024-25 school year onward. Additionally, they offered a tenure stipend of $3,358 for all teachers starting July 1, 2024, along with full healthcare coverage equivalent to Kaiser’s individual plan beginning January 1, 2025.
In contrast, the union’s demands include an 8% salary increase retroactive to the 2023-24 school year and continuing at that rate into the following year. They are also requesting a floating cap of 110% coverage under the Kaiser individual plan starting January 1, 2025, as well as the removal of costs associated with CalPERS retirement accounts, which amount to $1,812 per person, also effective January 1, 2025.
