On October 19, the third Global Development and Health Communication Forum was held at Tsinghua University, centered around the theme “Media Promoting Empathy and Equity.”

Organized by the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, in collaboration with the Global Development and Health Communication Research Center, the forum emphasized the vital role that media plays in achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The discussions centered on how media in the digital age can help create a more inclusive and equitable world.

Notable figures such as Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University; Zheng Zhijie, Chief Representative of the Beijing Office of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and Cui Shixin, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of People’s Daily, attended the opening ceremony and shared their insights.

In his keynote address, Zhou Qing’an, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, expressed that this forum brings together global scholars and experts with the hope of offering more resources and experiences to communication researchers and journalists. He emphasized the need to break down conceptual barriers and provide effective knowledge, so that participants can find concrete ways to focus on the key themes of “empathy” and “equity,” ultimately leading to the creation of outstanding work.

During the breakout sessions, attendees engaged in discussions surrounding two major topics: “Empowering Equity Advocacy through Innovations in Information and Communication Technology” and “Stories and Empathy: Bridging Divides in a Fragmented World.”

The forum welcomed over 150 guests and experts from the United Nations, government agencies, universities, NGOs, media, and businesses.
