During an interview on October 8, Pereira, the Director General of Bilateral Affairs at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, revealed that the Cuban government has officially reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek “partner country” status within the BRICS organization.
Pereira took to social media to express that “Russia currently holds the rotating presidency of BRICS, which plays a crucial role in global geopolitics and offers hope for countries in the Global South.”
In a related development, the Russian Ambassador to Cuba, Koronelli, confirmed on October 7 that Cuba has submitted its application for BRICS partner status. He also mentioned that Cuban President Díaz-Canel has received an invitation to participate in the upcoming BRICS meeting.
Earlier reports indicated that Russia will take over the rotating presidency of BRICS in 2024. As of January 1, countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia will officially join, expanding the group from five to ten nations. As BRICS continues to grow in both influence and appeal, more countries are expressing interest in applying for membership.
The 2024 BRICS summit is set to take place from October 22 to 24 in Kazan, Russia.
