An incredible event recently unfolded off the coast of California, drawing the attention of many observers. According to a press release from the Monterey Bay Whale Watch organization, more than 65 humpback whales were spotted just a mile offshore, engaging in what they called “lunge feeding.”
The organization described the scene as “unbelievable,” highlighting that these majestic whales were actively feeding for four hours straight in the area. Even experienced crew members stated that this was one of the most impressive feeding displays they have ever witnessed.
Videos captured the stunning moment when these giant whales erupted out of the water with their mouths wide open, devouring schools of fish. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game explains that humpback whales “gulp” vast amounts of food, expanding their throats with each mouthful of water and fish. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) notes that their diet primarily consists of small fish and krill.
Additionally, onlookers enjoyed the spectacle of hundreds of sea lions foraging alongside these magnificent marine mammals. This dramatic scene played out in Monterey Bay, which is located about 120 miles from San Francisco.
Humpback whales are often viewed as friendly creatures, frequently approaching boats and engaging with whale watchers, making them the highlights of these excursions. They are well-known for their stunning leaps out of the water, creating massive splashes as they re-enter the ocean—behavior that many interpret as socializing, communicating, or even shedding parasites. Another fascinating feeding technique they use is collective foraging, particularly through a method called “bubble net feeding.” In this technique, the whales work collaboratively to create a ring of bubbles that traps fish before they charge in for the meal. Additionally, humpbacks are known for their long migrations, typically traveling to colder, high-latitude waters during the summer to feed, then returning to tropical or subtropical areas to breed in the winter.
