Could you tell us about the unexpected connection you formed with Jamal Hinton?
Wanda Dench: It all started a few years ago when I mistakenly texted Jamal, thinking I was inviting my grandson to Thanksgiving dinner. I didn’t realize I had sent the message to a stranger until Jamal replied asking for a photo to confirm I was indeed his grandma. When he saw my picture, he jokingly asked if he could still join for Thanksgiving dinner. I replied, “Of course! Grandmas always want to feed everyone!”
What was it like getting to know Jamal and having him as part of your Thanksgiving celebration each year?
Wanda Dench: Jamal’s warmth and kindness really touched my heart. After that first Thanksgiving together in 2016, we decided to make it a tradition. No matter what challenges we faced in life, we kept celebrating Thanksgiving together. After my husband passed away due to complications from COVID-19 in April 2020, Jamal provided much-needed support and comfort during a difficult time.
Recently, you announced your battle with breast cancer. How did that diagnosis affect your upcoming Thanksgiving plans?
Wanda Dench: Yes, it’s been quite a journey. After I developed bronchitis, I underwent a CT scan that revealed some suspicious areas in my chest. A mammogram and further tests confirmed breast cancer, which came as a shock since there’s no history of cancer in my family and my previous mammograms were clear. I thought my last mammogram at 65 would mean I wouldn’t have to worry anymore, but I was wrong.
Despite the diagnosis, I’m determined that my treatment will not interfere with my Thanksgiving dinner plans with Jamal. I’ve learned that life goes on, even with its challenges.
