On October 15, a significant event unfolded in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, as the 2024 International Canoe Federation “Hangzhou Super Cup” concluded, showcasing the speed and passion of elite canoeing athletes against the stunning backdrop of the Fuchun River, which witnessed the breaking of several world records. However, beyond the shining stars of competition lies a dedicated group that deserves recognition—the event volunteers. Though they do not compete, they write their own vibrant chapters of youth through their hard work and enthusiasm.

To ensure the smooth execution of this high-profile international canoeing event with a condensed schedule, three local universities—Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, Hangzhou Normal University, and Hangzhou Vocational College of Science and Technology—mobilized nearly a thousand students to apply, ultimately selecting 307 volunteers to assist. Among these volunteers were several who previously served during the Hangzhou Asian Games, known as the “Little Qinghe.” Armed with invaluable experience, they returned to the international stage to continue the legacy of the Asian Games while playing a crucial role in the success of this event.

“I see my participation in the Hangzhou Super Cup as a testament to my ongoing commitment to volunteer service and fulfilling my desire to support sporting events,” shared Liu Huilong, a volunteer responsible for human resources who previously served at the Asian Games.

Last year, Liu experienced countless exhilarating moments as a volunteer at the Asian Games. After that event, he remained active in volunteering, eagerly stepping up to take on human resources tasks for the Super Cup, leading a team of both new and returning volunteers, and ensuring that all organizational arrangements were executed smoothly.

The Hangzhou Super Cup consisted of four major events that needed to be completed within an intense three-day schedule. Drawing from his experience at the Asian Games, Liu stated, “Although the schedule was tight, all roles and responsibilities were similar to those at the Asian Games, allowing us to provide guidance and support to the new volunteers. We also followed the Asian Games model to ensure that all processes were executed seamlessly.”

Completing the volunteer work at the Hangzhou Super Cup undoubtedly added significant value to Liu’s personal journey. “There are definitely challenging moments, but no matter the role, it’s essential to commit wholeheartedly,” he remarked.

If Liu Huilong and his peers represent the torchbearers of the Asian Games spirit, then volunteers like Chen Miao exemplify its broader expansion. A sophomore who hadn’t participated in the Asian Games, Chen became inspired by stories of past volunteers, which fueled her aspiration to take part in this year’s event.

As the only volunteer handling comprehensive affairs for the event, Chen expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. “Most of my senior classmates were volunteers during the Asian Games, and I often heard them share their experiences. When I learned that the Super Cup would take place in Fuyang, I knew I had to seize the chance, and I felt so honored to be selected,” she revealed.

At the Hangzhou Super Cup, Chen’s role primarily involved supporting her teachers with logistics for various departments. “By communicating with the teachers during work, I learned a wealth of new insights, akin to attending a very engaging practical class, while also gaining more experience in volunteer service,” Chen noted.

Many volunteers like Chen became instrumental in ensuring the success of the event, stepping up to take on responsibilities and contributing significantly, even if they had not undergone the rigors of the Asian Games.

Reflecting on the volunteer recruitment process, Zhou Linlin, the event’s human resources manager, noted her surprise at the enthusiasm shown by students. “Initially, we were concerned about whether we could fill the volunteer positions in such a short recruitment window. Yet, once the announcement went out, we quickly found that we had enough volunteers, including those who had served before and those eager to participate,” she recalled.

As the Hangzhou Super Cup concluded, Meng Qingdong, Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee at Hangzhou Vocational College of Science and Technology, expressed his happiness about the students’ recognition of the value of volunteerism. “This experience will undoubtedly enhance their learning, communication, coordination, and practical skills. More importantly, it’s remarkable that hundreds came together for a common purpose; this experience is invaluable to them.”

As Zhejiang strives to elevate its position as a sports powerhouse, and Hangzhou continues to develop as an international hub for events, the spirit of the Asian Games champions not only local sports culture but also paves the way for future events. In the post-Asian Games era, both veteran “Little Qinghe” volunteers and newcomers will continue to play vital roles, carrying forward the legacy of the Games while forging their unique stories in the world of sports volunteering.
