On October 16, 2023, the 2024 China-Latin America Media Cooperation Forum was held in Rio de Janeiro, jointly organized by the People’s Daily and Brazil’s “Business Observador.”
Over a hundred representatives from media, think tanks, and international organizations across 13 countries and regions gathered to explore the theme “Learning from Each Other and Building Friendships.” The discussions centered on the role of media cooperation in constructing a community of shared destiny between China and Latin America.
Chinese delegates highlighted that the exchange of civilizations is a crucial driver for the advancement of human civilization and global peace. They emphasized that the foundation of China-Latin America friendship lies in the people and is fostered through communication. They called on media from both regions to leverage their respective strengths in communication to build mutual trust, enhance cooperation, and cultivate shared development goals, ultimately contributing wisdom and efforts to the community of shared destiny.
Tia Ju, Deputy Speaker of the Rio de Janeiro State Assembly, stated in her address that the close cooperation between Chinese and Latin American media provides a platform for information dissemination, enabling a more authentic reflection of reality. She believes this will help dismantle stereotypes and foster deeper understanding. Tia Ju expressed hope that enhanced media collaboration would bring the peoples of Brazil and China closer together, paving the way for a future built on mutual respect and共同发展 (cooperative development).
Marcos Oliveira, President of “Business Observador,” remarked that Latin American and Caribbean nations are actively seeking friendly cooperation with China for mutual benefits. He emphasized the media’s role in offering diverse perspectives to help the public gain a comprehensive and objective understanding of current events in the region.
During the forum, representatives also engaged in discussions on two subtopics: “Enhancing Industrial Connections to Promote Economic Cooperation” and “Deepening Cultural Exchanges to Foster People-to-People Ties.”
Concurrent with the forum, the second International Communication “Silk Road Award” recruitment ceremony for the Latin America region and the launch of the report titled “A Community of Shared Destiny between China and Latin America – Cases from the Belt and Road Initiative” took place.
In the afternoon, a friendly photo exhibition between China and Latin America opened at the Rio de Janeiro Planetarium and will run for a month.
