In a recent interview with a Hamas official, the BBC reported that the organization plans to elect a new leader in March of next year. Due to security concerns, the identity of the new leader may be kept confidential.

The announcement follows Israel’s declaration that Yahya Sinwar, a prominent Hamas leader, has been killed in the Gaza Strip, a claim that Hamas has confirmed.

According to the report, a five-member committee will oversee Hamas’s operations until the new leader is chosen in March. The Hamas official mentioned to the BBC that, for safety reasons, the group might opt to keep the new leader’s identity under wraps.

Historically, following the assassinations of former leaders Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi by Israel, Hamas had also decided to maintain secrecy regarding the identities of its subsequent leaders.
