The Santa Clara Police Department recently launched its innovative BRAVE program, aimed at fostering a sense of responsibility and social awareness among the younger generation through education. As part of this initiative, the department introduced their new mascot, Walsh, a police dog symbolizing courage and dedication, featured prominently on the Santa Clara government website.
Named in honor of former police officer Sean Walsh, who tragically lost his life while serving in Afghanistan, the mascot embodies the values of bravery and loyalty. Sean’s mother, Cheryl Walsh, established a foundation dedicated to supporting the work of law enforcement dogs, which has also benefited the Santa Clara Police Department. Now, Walsh not only serves as the department’s mascot but also represents the core values of courage and commitment.
The launch of the BRAVE program marks a significant step forward for the police department in nurturing a safer community. This seven-week initiative is specifically designed for fourth-grade students. Each week, officers will dedicate an hour to educating the kids on vital topics such as responsibility, communication skills, handling peer pressure, bullying, and online safety. The curriculum also covers important information regarding drugs, alcohol, electronic cigarettes, and tobacco.
“In comparison to previous initiatives, the BRAVE program not only updates but also redefines the educational role of police in the community,” stated the Santa Clara Police Department. “We believe that through this program, students will gain essential knowledge while subtly integrating important values into their lives.”
