Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who faced new sexual offense charges just a month ago, has now been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, according to reports from American media today. This news comes shortly after he underwent emergency heart surgery last month amid ongoing scandals.
NBC News and ABC News cited sources indicating that the 72-year-old Weinstein is suffering from chronic myeloid leukemia and is currently receiving treatment in a New York prison.
Once a powerful figure in the entertainment industry, Weinstein has experienced a series of health setbacks, appearing notably frail and pale during a brief court appearance in September.
Following his heart surgery last month, his spokesperson reported that he was “currently out of immediate danger.”
Weinstein is serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of rape in California. He was also convicted in 2020 for raping and sexually assaulting actress Jessica Mann and for forcing a production assistant to perform oral sex, resulting in a 23-year sentence from a New York court. However, in April, the New York appellate court overturned that conviction, and Weinstein is now awaiting a retrial.
The allegations against Harvey Weinstein helped catalyze the “#MeToo” movement in 2017, which empowered victims to speak out and marked a significant moment in the fight against sexual misconduct.
To date, more than 80 women have accused Weinstein of harassment, sexual assault, or rape, including high-profile actresses like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ashley Judd.
