On October 25th, a report from the Ministry of Education highlighted a new initiative aimed at enhancing the teaching of standardized Chinese character writing in primary and secondary schools. This move is in line with the spirit of the National Education Conference and seeks to accelerate the development of a strong educational nation, promote the use of the national common language, and nurture the rich traditions of Chinese culture.
Guided by Xi Jinping’s thoughts on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, the initiative emphasizes the fundamental task of fostering moral integrity among students and enhancing both teacher and student proficiency in language and culture. The guidelines stress the importance of putting education at the forefront, respecting natural learning processes, ensuring innovation while adhering to core principles, and advancing initiatives in a systematic manner.
Key objectives outlined in the initiative include teaching students the correct sitting and grip positions for writing, fostering good writing habits, mastering the shape and writing skills of standardized Chinese characters, and deepening their understanding of the historical and cultural value embedded in these characters to bolster cultural confidence.
The initiative also lays out eight specific measures. First, it aims to cultivate good writing habits to help prevent issues like scoliosis and poor eyesight among students. Second, it focuses on improving writing standards, encouraging students to progressively learn standard script and regulated semi-cursive script to enhance both quality and speed. Third, it seeks to promote the rich cultural significance of Chinese characters, enabling students to appreciate their depth.
Additional measures include leveraging both in-class and extracurricular activities to strengthen writing education, involving students in national competitions such as traditional recitation and art exhibitions. Schools are encouraged to integrate standardized writing education into their cultural frameworks. The initiative also highlights the importance of teachers serving as role models, promoting competitions focused on writing skills such as penmanship and calligraphy, and including writing education in teacher training programs.
Moreover, the incorporation of digital technology is emphasized to explore new modes of standardized writing education. Finally, the establishment of a scientific evaluation mechanism is recommended to encourage the inclusion of standardized writing in assessment criteria.
Local educational authorities are urged to recognize the significance of this initiative and to develop sustainable mechanisms of support through policy, funding, and project backing. Schools are instructed to address the need for qualified writing instructors en masse and to ensure that facilities meet the necessary requirements for students’ physical development.
