On October 17, Liu Zhaomin, the mayor of Dongshan County,福建 Province, shared insights during the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Benefiting Enterprises and the Public” themed press conference. He emphasized the county’s commitment to developing its marine economy, highlighting that “Dongshan thrives by the sea.”
During the event, Liu elaborated on the core components and highlights of Dongshan’s vision to establish itself as a leading maritime economy. He outlined the overarching strategies, goals, key tasks, and supportive measures aimed at fostering high-quality development in the region’s marine economy.
As a significant player in福建’s marine resources, Dongshan boasts a wealth of opportunities in marine fisheries, coastal tourism, and emerging marine industries. Liu pointed out that in alignment with the national “Strong Ocean Country” strategy and the campaigns for “Maritime Fujian” and “Maritime Zhangzhou,” Dongshan has introduced a three-year action plan (2024-2026) to accelerate the construction of “Maritime Dongshan.” This plan encompasses various innovative initiatives and supportive policies focused on upgrading marine industries, fostering technological innovation, protecting the marine ecosystem, and enriching marine culture.
The action plan includes building five key areas of public infrastructure, extending five main industrial chains along the coastline, establishing five model modern marine services, nurturing five platforms for open cooperation, and promoting five major marine ecological protection projects. Xie Donghua, director of the Dongshan Development and Reform Bureau, noted that this action plan is the first of its kind to establish detailed county-level marine area use planning in the country, clarifying industrial layouts and promoting the integrated growth of various sectors.
The advancement of coastal culture and tourism is a critical element of Dongshan’s maritime development strategy. Fang Xueping, director of the Dongshan Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau, shared plans to enhance the integration of marine economy and tourism over the next three years. This will involve optimizing the quality of scenic areas, deepening the fusion of culture and tourism, improving the standards of marine sports, establishing interconnected travel routes, and expanding recreational infrastructure.
Situated at the southeastern tip of 福建, Dongshan lies strategically between Xiamen and Shantou, serving as a national first-class open port and a core area of the China-Philippines Trade and Economic Innovation Development Demonstration Zone. Liu concluded by expressing Dongshan’s ambition to build an international tourism island, further enhancing facilities, improving the environment, upgrading industries, and enhancing services, thereby setting a model for “Maritime Fujian” and “Maritime Zhangzhou.”
